Things to do in Ylläsjärvi

Ylläsjärvi is the quieter of the two Ylläs villages, spread around the lake of the same name on the fell's north-western side, away from the busier slopes and restaurant strip in Äkäslompolo a few kilometres over. Accommodation here leans towards standalone cottages rather than hotel blocks, which suits people chasing the northern lights, since a dark plot with no streetlight beats a car park view.

There is no dedicated fast shuttle laid on between the two villages, so check what your cottage owner or tour operator actually offers before assuming a quick hop across; a taxi or your own car is the reliable option.

Winter temperatures sit at -10 to -25°C, colder on clear nights, and slope access from Ylläsjärvi comes in via lifts on the north-western side of the fell rather than the main Äkäslompolo base.
