Things to do on the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers
Rovaniemi sits at the confluence of two rivers: the Kemijoki, Finland's longest at 550 km, and the smaller Ounasjoki, which joins it right by the town centre near the Jätkänkynttilä bridge.
In summer the riverside paths on both banks are the easiest free thing to do here, good for an hour's walk or a longer cycle, with the water open and used for canoeing and fishing (a day permit runs roughly 10 to 20 EUR).
From late winter the rivers freeze solid and are walked and snowmobiled across rather than sailed; operators run ice-floating trips in dry suits, typically 1 to 2 hours for around 60 to 90 EUR per person, floating on the frozen surface rather than swimming in open water.
