Things to do in Korouoma Canyon

Korouoma Canyon lies around 140 km from Rovaniemi, roughly a two-hour drive along secondary roads that narrow considerably in the final stretch, so allow extra time and take care in winter conditions.

The gorge is one of Finland's deepest, and from December into March its walls carry dozens of frozen waterfalls, drawing ice climbers with ropes, screws and a guide rather than casual walkers.

From June to September the appeal flips to hiking: marked trails run along the canyon rim and down past the falls, with sections of boardwalk and steep drops close to the path. There is no village at the canyon itself; Posio, about 20 km away, has the nearest hotels, cabins and a petrol station, and is the sensible base for an overnight stay.
