Things to do in Enontekiö and Hetta

Enontekiö is one of Finland's largest and most sparsely populated municipalities, and its main village, Hetta, sits more than 300 km from Rovaniemi by road (around 4 hours), so this is not a day trip. Hetta is the northernmost village in the Levi, Ylläs and the Western Fells region and carries a strong Sámi cultural presence, worth building time into an itinerary for rather than rushing.

It is also the starting point for the route into Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. A small local airport serves Enontekiö with limited scheduled flights, useful for skipping the long drive if timings line up.

The higher latitude and low light pollution make this one of the more reliable spots in the region for aurora viewing between late August and early April, though as everywhere, sightings are never guaranteed.
