Things to do in Simo
Simo is a small coastal municipality between Kemi and the river mouth, about 115 km from Rovaniemi on the road to Kemi, and it has none of the organised tour infrastructure you find in Kemi or the Rovaniemi centre. What draws people here is fishing: the local river and coastal waters are known for whitefish and river salmon, and anglers come independently rather than on packaged excursions.
The Gulf of Bothnia shoreline is quiet, without the icebreaker cruises or snow castle that Kemi trades on, and there is no equivalent to those seasonal, pre-booked attractions in Simo itself. Facilities are limited, so this suits self-driving visitors with their own gear or a booked local fishing guide, not travellers expecting a full day of arranged activities.
Check opening arrangements before setting out, since much of what operates here is small-scale and seasonal rather than year-round.
