Things to do at the Arctic Circle Hiking Area and Vaattunkiköngäs
The Arctic Circle Hiking Area sits right behind Santa Claus Village, 8 km from central Rovaniemi on bus route 8 (around 25 minutes), which makes it the easiest stretch of proper forest you can reach without a hire car. Marked trails run through pine forest and along the Kemijoki tributary to the Vaattunkiköngäs rapids, a couple of hours there and back at an easy pace, longer with a rest by the water.
In winter the same paths become snowshoe or ski routes, and the ground stays under snow from late October to mid-May, with temperatures down to -15°C or colder on a still January afternoon. Entry is free and the area is unstaffed, so bring your own map, water and a torch once daylight shortens toward the December kaamos.
Ice under fresh snow is the main hazard operators mention, even on a signed loop this close to town.
