Things to do in Ranua

Ranua sits 80 km south of Rovaniemi, around 1 h 15 by road, which makes it a day trip rather than a quick detour on the way to Kemijärvi or Kuusamo. Almost everyone who stops here is heading for Ranua Wildlife Park, the reason to make the drive: covered separately on our Ranua Wildlife Park page, with full detail on animals, enclosures and tickets.

The town itself has no other major attraction, so build the day around the park rather than expecting extra sights along the main street. Self-drive is the simplest option; a rental car from Rovaniemi gives you control over timing, since direct bus links are limited and infrequent. Organised excursions bundle transport with park entry and suit anyone unwilling to drive Finnish winter roads.

The park operates year-round, with animals visible in both summer and winter under different conditions, though opening hours shift by season and should be checked before setting off.
