Things to do in Kemijärvi

Kemijärvi is a small taiga town roughly 85 km north-east of Rovaniemi, best treated as a staging point rather than a destination in its own right. It sits at the edge of the lake and forest country that stretches towards the Pyhä-Luosto national park, about 35 km further on, and towards the Auttiköngäs rapids, a further stretch north-east.

Don't confuse it with Kemi, the coastal town 115 km south-west of Rovaniemi (roughly 1 h 30 by road) where the Sampo icebreaker and the SnowCastle operate — a mix-up that trips up a lot of first-time visitors reading maps too fast.

Kemijärvi itself offers modest lake and forest walks, ice fishing in winter, and a base for reaching the wider Kemijärvi–Pyhä-Luosto region; it isn't a major northern-lights hub and shouldn't be booked as one.
