Things to do at Siida, the Sámi Museum

Siida in Inari is Finland's national museum of Sámi culture and Lapland's nature, and it is the serious starting point for understanding the region rather than a folklorised roadside stop.

The permanent exhibition covers Sámi history, livelihoods and the four seasons of the northern ecosystem, and a marked nature trail runs outside along the shore of Lake Inarijärvi in the snow-free months. 5 hours for a full visit, longer if the outdoor trail is open.

Inari is 330 km from Rovaniemi, around 4 hours by car, so most visitors combine Siida with a night or two in the area rather than a day trip. Adult admission runs roughly 15 to 20 EUR; opening hours vary by season and the museum closes or shortens hours in the depths of winter, so check before travelling.
