Things to do in Kemi
Kemi sits 115 km south of Rovaniemi on the Bothnian Gulf, about 1 h 30 by car or roughly the same by train from Rovaniemi station. It is a working port and paper-mill town, not a resort, and outside winter it is a quiet, functional place with little to detain visitors beyond a stroll along the harbour.
Its reputation rests on two winter-only attractions based here: the Sampo icebreaker, which runs passengers out onto the frozen gulf, and the SnowCastle, rebuilt each year from roughly late December to early April. Both deserve their own visit and their own planning, covered separately. Do not confuse Kemi with Kemijärvi, a different town 85 km from Rovaniemi with no icebreaker or snow castle.
Book Kemi's headline attractions well ahead, since capacity is limited and sells out in peak weeks.
