Things to do in Tornio

Tornio sits on the Swedish border, about 130 km from Rovaniemi (roughly 1 h 30 by road), directly across the river from Haparanda on the Swedish side.

The two towns share a single shopping centre, IKEA included, straddling the border itself, and a joint golf course where you can tee off in Finland and putt in Sweden — useful if you fancy playing two countries in one round, since the clock shifts an hour crossing the fairway. Sweden uses the krona, not the euro, so carry both currencies or a card that handles conversions cleanly.

This is a working border town rather than a wilderness base: expect a compact centre, a handful of cafes and shops, and a couple of hours' wandering rather than a full day's itinerary. It works best as a stop on the way to or from Kemi (about 20 km further) rather than a dedicated overnight trip from Rovaniemi.
