Things to do in Äkäslompolo

Äkäslompolo is the older, quieter of the two villages on the Ylläs fell, a cluster of chalets, restaurants and a few shops on the shore of Lake Äkäslompolo, about 170 km (2 h 15) from Rovaniemi.

It sits on the opposite side of the fell from Ylläsjärvi, a separate village that is often mixed up with it despite belonging to the same ski area, so check which one your accommodation actually sits in before booking.

In summer the lake is used for swimming and paddling, and the village is the usual starting point for the marked trail up Ylässtunturi, the highest fell in the area at 718 m. Restaurants and grocery shops close earlier than in Levi, and things quieten down out of season.
